Acerca del libro
A photobook on Millefiori beads patterns. Fascinated by the history of beads, their commercial travel routes and their modern and magnetic graphics, we wanted to explore these beautiful ornaments under new perspectives. Millefiori is a glass technique that produces decorative designs on glass beads. The term millefiori, meaning in Italian words “a thousand flowers”, indicates a technique known from Roman times called “mosaic". The millefiori technique involves the production of glass canes, known as murrine, with multicolored motifs that are visible only from the cut ends. The murrine cane is heated in a furnace and pulled to the desired size while maintaining the cross-sectional structure. Once cooled it is then cut into cylindrical segments and then embedded and compacted to obtain a mosaic effect. Since the 15th century, Venetian glassworkers have been using this technique to fit the tastes of the times and from the 19th century, they began to produce star-shaped and more refined canes. For many centuries they represented an important product exported all over the world. A passion for these beads has allowed us to reflect on their historical value as a form of commodity. As a result we have created a photographic studio with mapping techniques concerning the patterns obtained from the plane development of the cylindrical beads surfaces
