Acerca del libro
This book is born out of the desire to reconcile the singularity of individual existence with the plurality of proper names. What does it mean for one to live the singular physical existence that the self experiences in consciousness and others perceive in relationships, knowing that it bears more than one name? What happens when one receives, gives, or invents a name after the originary naming event of birth? Who are we talking about when we talk about that same referent who is referred to by different names? The incommensurability of language, culture and space? Willful rebirth or psychic self-exile? Strategy of survival? Why do names matter?
The five narratives in this character study emerged after repeated attempts to understand photographs taken of oneself in relation to photographs taken by oneself. Each plots a journey that the “I”, confronted with a host of images, attempts to travel in order to call on a name, the names of an other. A few sequences. The wee hours of morning. The time it takes for your split-ends to grow. It happened when the printer swallowed paper. It goes on after you finish reading and flip the page. The “I” won’t have arrived the next time you open this book.
