Acerca del libro
A comprehensive review of the 2006-20011 painting series MUSE / MUSEUM looking at the history of artists and art, including works based on the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago. In much of the series, the artist paints his own images of mythic-looking men into hand-painted reproductions of art magazine ads that celebrate a wide range of historic and contemporary artists; while later works position the same men tattooed with title tag language appropriated from the walls of the Art Institute of Chicago, referencing select specific paintings from the museum's collection.

As a painter and photographer, Jack Balas is interested in recontextualizing images of men in a variety of emotional, political and stylistic scenarios -- contexts in which they function as everyman, but are more vulnerable than their surface perfection might suggest. His work is in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others.
