Having been a figurative artist for 25 years, I became interested in using my painting to explore Buddhist Koans. They are paradoxical stories given to students by Zen Masters for contemplation. The response to a Koan is a personal one, however, attempts are often made to apply a universal meaning or interpretation. This process can be interesting and valuable, however in this book I have focused more on the way a Koan can point towards a truth which is beyond thought and rational understanding. They can hint at an underlying intelligence which unifies us all and is experienced by letting go of analytical interpretations. By accepting not knowing, our thoughts can subside and we can experience a presence of no thought. Hence the title, A Space Between Thoughts.
I hope my paintings show an emotional response rather than a representational one. As with the Koans, I hope the reader views the paintings without a need for explanation. They are what they are.
