The photographs in this book were taken during a three-week journey through the state of Oaxaca in the far south of Mexico. The journey ranged from Pacific Coast beaches to highlands inhabited by descendants of the ancient Mixteca people, and from busy cities and market towns to quiet agricultural settings. We met indigenous artists and artisans working in wood, clay, and textiles, and a farmer who celebrates and preserves the traditional self-sufficiency of the campesino. Throughout our journey doors were opened for us into the homes and studios of these people who are the heart of Oaxaca.
