There’s no better descriptive medium for Alaska than that of photography. Words help, but often sound exaggerated and unreal. As a photographer living in Alaska, one is provided an infinite pallet of landscapes and subjects, but they don’t come easy. I learned an important principle in outdoor photography in Alaska…feet first, then photo. This was a hard lesson taught by a slip on the ice while out shooting one winter’s day. The principle works well for any outdoor photography adventure and serves as another reminder as well. That reminder is that I’m outside for myself first, the photography second. When I repeat this mantra in my head as I move along in dodgy conditions, it helps me remember why I’m there in the first place…to enjoy the world around us.
Photography, nature and exploration are a natural mix for me. Whether photographing the Alaskan Brown Bear, hiking the high cliffs of the Hawaiian pali, or just waiting for the sun to rise, I thrive on the anticipation of taking away an unforgettable photo.
I believe compelling images emerge from my focus to present the world in a fascinating and unique way. Just as a painter or writer invests a piece of their soul in a work, as a photographer, I invest myself by being “out there.” Whether off the beaten track, on the street, or high above in the air, I’m passionate in my pursuit of capturing the beauty of the great world around us.
Enjoy the images. Enjoy Alaska.
