Agnes Esther (Hurst) (Harmon) Bryant, "Aggie", was born the
fourth of eight children to Othar Thomas and Della Mae (Williams) Hurst in Georgetown, Delaware, June 1, 1933. She grew up fighting through segregation; walking three and half miles each day on cold, dirt roads to and from school; yet the winter's chill did not destroy her “Warm, Positive Spirit”; she pressed on. Unable to attend school after eighth grade due to closed doors to education for Negroes in Delaware at that time, she went to work in local factories, married Rufus Percy Harmon, and raised three children as a single parent, after her husband’s sudden death in 1969.

Despite these extenuating obstacles, with her vigilance and courage, she made sure her children could get the most out of life by encouraging them to follow educational roads she had never seen or was not allowed to travel. Her motivation paid off; her oldest daughter, Teresa, earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Master of Education
