Les Schmidt was born in central New Jersey in 1960. His father, a graphic artist who studied classical portraiture under renowned Hungarian artist Lajos Markos, fascinated his son with his talent for combining realism with abstractionism. Rather than being formed by contemporary pop culture, a young Schmidt developed strong aesthetic ties to early twentieth century modernism.

Today, his images of forgotten objects and places serve as portraits of a region that has continually experienced decay and regeneration.
