Pete Buffer developed an interest in photography after purchasing his first 35mm camera while on active duty in the US Army in the Korean DMZ. Years later, after graduating from Law school at the University of Iowa he started traveling overseas for pleasure. The first ventures to other countries resulted in sketchy travel diaries and a few accompanying photographs. Advances in technology (laptops and digital cameras) spurred his experimenting with longer, more detailed, journals that included more pictures.

However, it was his initial attempts at underwater photography after learning how to scuba dive in 1999 that caused people to notice and remark about his photographic instincts. Encouraged by these positive comments, he continued this interest in photography and added more and more pictures to his travel diaries.
