Frances Welch was born in Arkansas but has spent most of her life in California where she raised four children and received her university education in linguistics and multi-cultural education. She was a teacher and bilingual program advisor in the Los Angeles Unified School District for twenty-five years. Her research on this book included travel in Italy, extensive reading about WWII in Europe, including her uncle’s diary which is the glue that holds this story together. Ms Welch lives on the Palos Verdes Peninsula with her husband Kermit, a musician.
