Gerard Merchant was born December 3, 1959 Lynchburg, Virginia located in southeastern United States. Gerard is an artist who works primarily in wood sculpture. His passion and vision is allowing natural form to be reborn. His sculptures emerge through a process of retakes and variations that mark his creative journey of examining the ambiguity between his vision and the wood’s already exquisite origination in the sculptress, Mother Nature. Gerard considers creating works of art a gift which is executed using unclear and less formal rules and which should always reference the partnership with Mother Nature.
His sculptures show an interassociation of structure, from its original form. This allows him the freedom of his own interpretation unhindered by the historical reality of Mother Nature's a priori sculpting. By choosing mainly informal solutions, he tries to develop forms that do not follow predictable criteria, but are based on subjective associations and intui
