Douglas Spoors is a semi-retired lawyer, mediator, author, and screenwriter, educated in the U.S. and Europe. His first work as a lawyer was in Bangkok, Thailand, and since that time, he has spent over 26 years representing clients in trade matters in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. He has been published in law journals on topics of international law, securities, and finance. He is the founder of the Institute for Mixed Method Mediation. The Cannons of Costa Rica is his first novel.

He has also written five screenplays, including No Margin For Error, Destino, Carl, Mr. Henry's Storytime, and Cradle of Power (an adaptation of Part One of this book, co-written with Michael Tucci).

To gain "hands on" sailing experience while writing this book, he signed on as a Deckhand with the Brig Pilgrim, a 120 foot fully functional replica of the ship made famous by Richard Henry Dana in his book Two Years Before the Mast.
