Runagate was founded in 1996 by Kalamu ya Salaam and Kysha N. Brown. It is dedicated to promulgating New Orleans culture and African heritage cultures worldwide. Karen A. Celestan, a New Orleans writer, poet and public relations coordinator, joined Runagate as a partner in 1997. The first anthology from Runagate, Fertile Ground, includes the works of renowned writers Amiri Baraka, Kathleen Neal Cleaver, Haki Madhubuti, E. Ethelbert Miller, Sonia Sanchez and a host of other writers, received critical acclaim.
Another Runagate title, From a Bend in the River: 100 New Orleans Poets, is praised by critics as "...one of the definitive works of the New Orleans literary scene." Bend includes almost every major established and many emerging poets living and working in the Crescent City....
