Acerca del libro
One hundred years ago, Ann’s mother and Steffi’s grandfather fled the Ukraine to begin new lives in North America. Within a decade of their arrival, the uniquely American passenger pigeon was hunted to extinction. Through images and writing, this full-color, 82-page catalog details "Moving Targets," an art exhibition spanning three years of research and exhibitions in four states in the eastern U.S.
Four sections comprise the catalog: "Flight and Nesting" conveys the story of the passenger pigeon; "Flight and Landings" is about the artists' forbears' migrations; and the "Passenger Pigeon Portrait Gallery" features 14 artists who reside within the bird’s former nesting range. The fourth section provides a recap of centenary events and programs in the Pittsburgh (PA) area, which included "Moving Targets."
The catalog includes six essays that discuss the exhibition from the perspectives of ecology, environmental history, the Jewish diaspora, and art. Essay authors include Joel Greenberg, Dr. Patricia DeMarco, Dr. Ruth Fauman- Fichman, Dr. Erik Garrett, Dr. Sara Adlerstein Gonzalez, and Elizabeth Monoian and Robert Ferry of the Land Art Generator Initiative.
Through "Moving Targets," the artists ask why some communities, whether human or animal, have been targeted for extinction.
