A photographic essay on the most important New Orleans cemeteries, containing a text which gives an overview of the historical context of these singular places. Called by natives: "Cities of the Dead" these sacred places are an integral part of New Orleans life.Just as much of our knowledge concerning world history comes from items found in graves and the manner in which the dead are memorialized, so much of the cities history is connected to the myths and facts of how this city views death and the deceased. Containg more than 200 photographs, this may be the most complete compilation of images and text to be found on this subject.

I was born in 1944. I grew up in New York City and Greensboro, North Carolina. I graduated from Greensboro College and The University of North Carolina. I moved to New Orleans in 1965 and began to photograph the culture of that singular city. Nothing captured my imagination like its unique cemeteries. In 2005 hurricane Katrina destroyed my negatives, slides and prints. Since that time I have continued to photograph these mysterious and wonderful sacred sites.
