Acerca del libro
The Texas Photographic Society’s quarterly Portfolio Competition with juror Kenda North features an Emerging and a Mid-Career Photographer every month. TPS defines an “Emerging Photographer” as a person who has not been featured in a solo gallery exhibition and defines a “Mid-Career Photographer” as a person who may have had a solo gallery exhibition, but is not represented by a commercial gallery.
The 2010 Portfolio Competition II winners are:
Emerging Photographers
Susan Barnett (New York, NY), “Not In Your Face”
“In this series, the t-shirt is starkly evident, but the photographs are not about the shirts per se.”
Jenny Sampson (Berkeley, CA), “Skateboarder Tintype Portrait Series”
“My attraction to skaters grew from my interest in looking at people in general, and more specifically of skateboarders as a faction of youth that defied the boundaries of age.”
Robert Cassway (Wyncote, PA), “Series Untitled”
“Robert Cassway has traveled to the western part of the United States and Canada photographing the quickly disappearing structures of the 19th and early 20th centuries.”
Mid-Career Photographers
Ellen Jantzen (St. Louis, MO), “Reality of Place”
“I am intrigued with how a person adapts to their environment; how they are absorbed and changed.”
Jean Laughton (Interior, SD), “My Ranching Life”
“This series is a diary of what I see while cowboying and working with the neighboring ranchers—preserving this time in family ranching, while also depicting the present as historical from my specific daydream perspective . . .”
Kathleen Robbins (Columbia, SC), “Into the Flatland”
“Into the Flatland explores familial obligation and our conflicted relationship with 'home.' ”
