Acerca del libro
Rhyl emerged from marshland scrub after an act of parliament, in 1794, allowed local landowners to drain the land. The small village of about 300 inhabitants grew after the trend for ‘taking the air’ and ‘sea bathing’ started for those living in industrial, smoky England.
The opening of the Chester to Holyhead Railway in 1848 allowed an ever-increasing number of people to visit Rhyl more easily and large houses were built to accommodate the wealthy and their servants who would spend a month or more ‘holidaying’.
The advent of package holidays caused its steady decline during the 1970’s; the beautiful large houses and hotels were converted to flats and bedsits, housing people with social and drug related problems.
Rhyl is attempting to reverse the decline and reestablish itself as a desirable place to live and holiday, but is struggling with outdated attitudes and opinions regarding the town.
Barriers is a book of photographs depicting fences and walls, which combined with text to give, change or enhance meaning, challenges the viewer to ponder their own preconceived attitudes to Rhyl. Are these opinions based on truth or do they reflect social conditioning; media and society dictates how we feel, what and who to value and how we should react.
