Acerca del libro
On October 8th 2004 the Hertfordshire Mercury published an article in which it was claimed that there was a labyrinth of underground tunnels and chambers beneath the streets of the county town.
Twins Tim and Ben Acheson claimed to be modern descendants of the Knights Templar and that the Order still held meetings in these tunnels. It was suggested that the even more secret order of the Illuminati also met in the hidden chambers.
Six Knights Templar were imprisoned in Hertford Castle in February 1308 on the King;s orders. Hertford was thought to be one of the places where their treasure was hidden and perhaps the location for the last resting place of the Holy Grail.
These revelations came at the time of the release of Dan Brown's book - The Da Vinci Code - and the attention of the world's media turned to Hertford.
The author of this book decided to follow up this story and has put together a fascinating history of Hertford following the Norman conquest to its present day status as a thriving market town.
Each location of the tunnel network is investigated along with maps and photographs detailing their location underground.
Much of medieval Hertford has been destroyed by modern roads or housing developments but enough remains in the buildings to piece together the extent of the tunnel network.
Do they still exist? Are they still in use?
The evidence for and against is presented and what is uncovered is a fascinating story of a small town's development against a backdrop of civil war, secret societies and some mysteries that can't be easily explained.

I started writing professionally in 1996 and have had hundreds of articles published in national and local magazines. Many can be found on my website. I have had a non-fiction true crime work published called The Camden Town Murder, a famous unsolved crime from 1907. I have since self published in eBook format a series of murder mysteries, anthologies and essays on local history. My writing career was interrupted when I became Town Centre Manager in my home town of Hertford. I am now retired and you can keep up with my thoughts on Hertford on my home page.
