Acerca del libro
The Recoleta Cemetery, the oldest cemetery in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was designed in 1822 by a French Engineer Prosper Catelin. In 1888, the architect Juan A. Buschiazzo expanded and redesigned it.
The architectural style of the tombs and mausoleums reflects a mixture of art-nouveau, neo-classical, neo-gothic, art-deco, Bizantine and Greek. Some of the monuments also exhibit multiple religious symbols such as a cross and menorah in one of the more elaborate monuments. The European influence in architecture not only in the cemetery but also in the city of Buenos Aires was pronounced during the period when the cemetery was developing with both architects and materials being imported from Europe.
Located in the upscale Recoleta Barrio of Buenos Aires, this Cemetery is the final resting place of many of Argentina's wealthiest and most famous families and personages. It contains the tombs and mausoleums of independence patriots, presidents of the Republic, military, scientists and artists. Manyu of the crypts and mausoleums were the work of famous architects and are adorned with sculptures by prominent artists. More than 70 of these are designated National Historic Monuments.
Stephen Harris photographed in the cemetery while living in Buenos Aires, during 2006 and 2007.
Luz-Mary Harris edited the photographs and this book.
