Acerca del libro
This is the illustrated Catalogue of an exhibition held at the Reform Club in London in 2016 to celebrate the political life of Henry Peter Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham & Vaux (1778-1868). As Lord Chancellor, Brougham played a central part in securing the passage of the Great Reform Act in 1832; he was also responsible for many improvements in the civil law, in ending the slave trade, in outlawing slavery in the British dominions, in founding London University, establishing the Charity Commission, and in bringing about other social, political and educational reforms.
The Catalogue illustrates contemporary ephemera relating to Brougham's student days at Edinburgh University; the Lord Chancellor's purse made specially for him; letters patent granting Brougham's titles; printed caricatures; important holograph letters; oil portraits and original sketches of Brougham; and much else. Most of the material, which is in private collections, has never before been published.
