Acerca del libro
These photographs were taken over a seven year period from 2011 to 2017 inclusive. The basis for selection was primarily self satisfaction, that is, portraits that I deem to have some worth visually as well as communicating something about the person and environment.
The selection is from over 50,000 photographs taken in Thailand during this period. Of course, this number includes many photographs other than portraits. But this still makes the process extremely tiresome and presents the problem of what to include and what to exclude. To simplify this a personal benchmark has been applied; this is simply 'do I like the photograph or not?'. So this body of work is very much a personal selection.
This is also the first body of work (in Thailand) where all the images selected have been processed to black and white. It has been many years since I have produced a body of work entirely of black and white images. This goes back to the film era in the 1980's and 90's, when I mostly shot black and white portraits on film and produced a similar work titled 'People in Perspective'.
Most of the images in this book have been obtained locally, either at my home village or close by. Many of the people photographed are friends, relatives or neighbours. There are of course images from various travels to other provinces and these are evident by different costumes and environments.
The portraits I consider to be environmental where some of their location or activity is observable. But I stray from this notion on many occasions as I do like to move in close. My photographic behaviour is normally candid; I don't ask for permission to take someone's photo, preferring to capture the moment before it's lost. Fortunately I live in a country where people don't take offence at being photographed. Rather the opposite is the case, people feel special when I have selected them, and many times will thank me for taking their photo.
