Acerca del libro
Lopez is one of the lesser-known San Juan Islands, not often visited by the residents of the other islands, and 'famous' for its 'flatness' and its lack of obvious sights to be seen. Lopez's flatness comes from its formation of glacial till, basically gravel left behind as the glaciers retreated millennia ago. But this is great for cyclists and the 'Tour De Lopez' attracts nearly a thousand cyclists every year. Its flatness - and its soil - also makes it much better for agriculture - grass-fed beef, excellent bacon and delicious ice cream.
There are also more publicly accessible beaches than the other islands too, Watmough being my favorite: quiet, sheltered, a magnificent view and clear water.
Lopez is famous for the 'Lopez wave': pass a car and the driver - well at least Lopezian drivers - will raise a hand - or sometimes a finger or two, to you. Not responding promptly marks you as a tourist!
Lopez village is smaller and quieter than the neighboring islands, and is not packed with the usual tourist gift shops. The views over Lopez harbor are spectacular though and there is a small museum, a bookshop, a few places to buy a gift to take back home, and a selection of places to eat from hamburgers and beer to fine cuisine. There are no hotels on the island so make reservations at one of the many local B & B's before you arrive.
Lopez is an island of subtle attractions, and deserves to be toured, whether by bicycle, foot or car. You can easily spend a day or a week-end end here, or really wind down after a few days. It's also the quickest of the San Juan Islands to get to by ferry!
A friend of mine even swam to Lopez from Anacortes…
