The 56th edition of the Monterey Jazz Festival is Sept. 20 - 22, 2013, with a Friday afternoon kick-off. Here is a close look at the Monterey Jazz Festival when it started in 1958 and 1959, the oldest continously running jazz festival in the world. More pictures not shown in the Preview from 1959 and 1965 with close-up action pictures of the great musicians of that day that have a place in the music world as the Jazz Greats of the day. The festival is held every year in September. These are images that were taken by Sam and Jim Vestal, California news photographers that remained active from the 1950's to the present day. Some of their photographic works are just becoming available for collectors as photographic archival prints or canvas giclees for jazz enthusiasts today.

Clayton, CA,
I was a news photographer and picture editor for seven newspapers, and member of the National Press Photographers Assc. since 1956. A Life Member of the San Francisco Bay Area Press Photographers Association, after being the Picture Editor at The Sacramento (CA) Union (1968-89), New York Newsday (1989-94), and Contra Costa Times (1994-96) when I retired after 40-years in the newspaper business - starting as a shooter since 1956. I'm retired but still shoot and actively travel today for my own interest. The assorted blurb.com books have turned out to be a way to gather many of my images for nice and simple presentations.

The 54th edition of the Monterey Jazz Festival is set for Sept. 16-18, 2011. This is a collector's book on some of the jazz greats that were there in The Early Years - shown in this edition at the first MJF 1958, then 1959, and back again 1965. Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Cal Tjader, Charlie Mingus, Harry James and more. Even Sonny Rollins and Dave Brubeck who still play today were there. It is an opportunity to get actual photographic prints by special order, even if you don't buy the book - a real bargain at any cost - see data as you flip the pages in your computer on the internet.
