AUTISM AND DISPOSABLE CAMERA
Over the last few years I have learned that an artist’s perception urges us to question the way things are seen. We are driven by our own emotions to create works, whether it is to give a message to the public, or to share a personal experience. The intention with this project is to explore and experience how photography can help people with autism, by enabling them to use photography to express their own experiences of the world.
The resulting book is, my understanding of what autism is, with the help of their parents, carers, and members of a branch of the National Autistic Society and is also about the progression, in some of them, of their situational awareness, through the use of photography.
The black and white portraits demonstrate the trust between this group of people and me and the photographs following the portraits are about my attempt to encourage them to use disposable cameras to express and share their realities and their own perception of the world.
“Art” as Yoshiko’s mother said: “opens up her world a little bit to those who love her, when she does art it is a little looking glass into her mind.”
