Kathy Thompson’s paintings are primarily inspired by the work of such impressionist and post-impressionist artists such as Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cezanne, Henri Matisse, and Franz Marc, and by the music of Bob Dylan and The Beatles. Her use of vivid and contrasting colors to capture the essence of a scene or of a song can be attributed to her study of these famous artists.

Inspired by her study of art and art history in college, Ms. Thompson taught herself to draw and paint by attempting to replicate masterpieces such as “Starry Night” (Van Gogh), “Artist’s Garden at Argenteuil” (Monet), “The Card Players” (Cezanne), “The Dream” (Marc), “Open Window, Collioure“ (Matisse), and “Weilheim-Marientplatz” (Kandinsky). Through this means, Ms. Thompson became familiar with the artists’ styles and techniques. She also has studied and painted in the studio of Washington D.C. artist Dana Ellyn and is a member of Washington DC’s International Arts and Artists, the D.C. Art Center
