Acerca del libro
This collection of short stories, set predominantly in the Visayas Region in the Philippines, presents us with the mundane but omnipresent activities of her characters – festivities, flirtations, study, food and play – to further seduce us, as our need to get to know them better increases. The author, Ida O. Wolff also ushers us into the supernatural dimension of local provincial life— its healers, the “invisible ones” and their rituals: a pregnant mother’s craving pushes her young daughter into the dark waters of enchantment, robbing her of sleep and ultimately, her life. A visit from a former sweetheart provokes the conflation of a couple’s unnerving past, the uncertain present, and a more comfortable future; a young woman is abandoned on her wedding day; friendships form among pre-pubescent young girls laced with innocence, fears, glee and tragedy. A young wife inadvertently stumbles on her husband’s affair. These are some of the women who live and move within Ida O. Wolff’s short stories. But, as in all stories that touch and tug hearts, these pieces envelope the unrelenting and universal challenges that characterize the human condition. Ida O. Wolff grew up in Samar and Cebu City, Philippines, and writes about the people she knew back home. At present Ida makes her home in Ithaca, New York, with her husband, John.
