Acerca del libro
This book endeavors to show Ghana’s diversity. Its people come from over 100 linguistic and cultural tribes. The country continues to have functioning tribal structures– including the Ashanti, Ewe and Ga– alongside modern lifestyles and government. As its economy grows, what was once the Gold Coast is now expanding its fame in areas like cocoa, textiles and music. Ghanaians love family, food and jubilation despite the hardships they face such as rural poverty, environmental health threats and corruption. Ghana’s diversity of landscape is stunning: In the north the climate is arid and savannah dominates; in the east the rolling Akwapem Range forms a natural border with Togo; and in the south and west forest ecosystems and largely undeveloped beaches and wetlands attract many visitors.
The photos were taken between 2006 and 2008 throughout Ghana. This was a very important and proud period for Ghana as it not only celebrated its 50th anniversary of Independence but also displayed its achievements and stability while hosting prestigious events like the Africa Cup of Nations football tournament and the African Union Summit. Ghana was also preparing for what turned out to be another round of peaceful and democratic elections. For these reasons and more, Ghana is the shining star of West Africa: a diamond in the rough.
