There are 56 officially recognised ethnic minorities in China, of which the biggest is the hui who comprise nearly half of the 20 million Muslims living scattered throughout this vast country. Spiritual guidance for hui women can come from trained female ahong (imams) who are qualified to lead women-only mosques, preside over weddings and funerals, teach the Qur'an, Arabic, how to pray, and give moral and spiritual counselling.
This book gives an insight into the private lives and work of female ahong and female mosques in the fast-changing world of modern China. It contains 118 colour photographs made at mosques in the provinces of Gansu, Ningxia and Shaanxi.
