Poems from the constant calling voice of the west, pulling us away from home into the great unknown. Far from the ocean, out into the rolling prairies that remind us dimly of crashing waves. It's a long way from home, and we're slowly making our way back.

" Long Time, No Sea "

tell me all about life on the prairies
long time, no sea, baby
long time, no sea
how can you be free
tied to the railroad track?
how can you breathe
without the raging whitecaps
to bring the tide and break your back?
how can you make it
in the land of the employed?
where the smell of gas gets in your nose
and brings you low and burns your soul
where the endless wandering leather and wool
gets lost in the waves of the imitation ocean
the tall grass dreams in their endless motion
that swirl over your head wherever you lay
and never stay calm like the stock-still bay
now the only thought that sets you free
from the red dirt bluff
and the cottonwood tree
is "long time, no sea," baby
long time, no sea
