Acerca del libro
The Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, is a tradition spanning over 200 years. This year saw the 180th edition of the festival, which is the world’s largest yearly fair. It used to be an occasion to celebrate Bavarian culture and the local beer, but has become a location for party pilgrimage, where the goal is to drink as much as possible during as many days as possible.
1999 was the first time I ever visited the festival, since then I have been going almost every year. The people, the scale of the event, and the beer has always drawn me there, but I have never documented it before. This year I decided to change that fact so I spent 8 days and a total of about 80 hours documenting the festival.
Being Swedish myself I wanted to give the essay an outside view of the event. Not only showing the people having fun and enjoying themselves but also focusing more on the flipside of the coin of enjoyment.
The motivation with a project of this kind for me is to turn ordinary scenes into something dramatic, special, memorable, emotional. I firmly believe that every photograph in this series contains at least one or more of these characteristics.
From a technical side, all photographs in this series have been taken with an off-camera flash and a digital camera with a 35mm lens. Off-camera flash is a technique that I have used for the past year to add contrast, which gives a certain look that I prefer.
