The photos in his books are real and have not been modified at all (except for minor brightness/contrast adjustments); most were taken with a Nikon D40 with a 55-200 VR zoom lens. The D40 is very rugged and can handle abuse that would make many other cameras fail, yet it is small, lightweight and easy to use.
