Acerca del libro
In 2013 Philakahle launched a project to empower its Home-Based Carers to become advocates for change in Okhahlamba. These women have worked on the front lines of the AIDS epidemic since the very beginning, They provide essential services to thousands of vulnerable clients across an area devastated by HIV, TB, and poverty. They know their communities better than anyone else, though they rarely have the chance to demand change. We hoped to give them that chance by teaching them express their experiences and stories through Photovoice.
We loaned digital cameras to fifteen longtime carers and worked with them over three months and four workshops to build their technical skills and their awareness of photography as an advocacy tool. By the second month they were building powerful bodies of work. We invited major stakeholders to attend a finale gallery event. The carers told their stories with passion and engaged in fierce debate, their pictures projected onto the wall. Their work spoke clearly of the diverse and pressing needs of Okhahlamba.
This books presents some of that work, and the stories that went with it.
