There are many interesting phenomena that occur during the partial phases of a total eclipse, well worth watching and enjoying. But nothing can compare to the drama of the last direct sunlight disappearing. Then, as your eyes adapt to the sudden deeper darkness, the solar corona blossoms overhead like a celestial flower, beautiful and primally terrifying at the same time. Its appearance is always different and unpredictable - and the emotional impact is profound. Nothing else can deliver this perspective of the dynamics of the solar system. No combination of photos or videos can even approach being there in person!
I was born in Chicago, but have lived in Idaho for more than 35 years. This has given me the opportunity to explore the mountains and rivers of the American West. Whether hiking, rafting, or touring by car, I have always brought my camera along to capture the scenic wonders along the way. My home in Idaho Falls gives me the privilege of having Yellowstone National Park as my 'home field'. Yellowstone is a world-class site for both wildlife and geological features. The national park preserves the heart of the Yellowstone country in Wyoming, but the effects of the great Yellowstone volcanic system extend across Idaho and on into Montana. Many of my best photos and favorite memories originate in the greater Yellowstone region, and I hope to share them with as many people as possible.
