In 1997 GROW (Gardeners Reclaiming Our Waysides) was formed to landscape the Carson City, NV Freeway. Landscaping Freeways was not something that the Nevada Department of Transportation did. 15 years later, after securing the funding, Phase I of the Carson City Freeway was landscaped with native or naturalized plants as well as Freeway or Public Art. The Art tells the story of Carson City through vignettes at each interchange or gateway. The theme, "Carson City's History in Motion," that is carried out in Phase I will be continued throughout the rest of the Freeway as it is completed. This book illustrated the interpretative signs placed by GROW along the multi-purpose path adjoining the Freeway. Hopefully the short stories will inspire you to learn more of the history of Carson City and other western towns.
