In 2010, after more that thirty years of using film cameras, the author bought his first digital SLR, a Canon 500D.
The images in this book were captured during the first three years of using his DSLR. During this period of learning to use a new camera and medium, several things have changed in his approach to capturing images. In digital the ability to capture many more images of the subject at no extra financial cost has been liberating. However, the temptation to snap away crazily without paying much attention to detail has been tempered by the fact that he still prefers to use the camera in manual mode. This is one thing that has not changed from his mode of operation when using film.
The final section of this book contains a few images that have been manipulated using computer software. However, the author believes that some of these techniques will very quickly become kitsch and dated just as the use of extreme effects filters became in the 1980s.
Leonard Ferguson has been a keen amateur photographer for over thirty years. His particular interests are landscape and architectural photography.
