Native Soil

The book “Native soil” by Irina Popova is a part of her project about her motherland. Currently living in the Netherlands, Irina tries to separate official patriotism from the personal memories and define what this land means for her. She collected her family history, child memories and sad and funny stories in the texts with the images of the country from different geographical points and times, from different stories and reportages, which she united under metaphorical and epical idea of the Country. The book is created with the support of Rijksakademie residency, Amsterdam 2012 The incomes from the sales of the book will go to the project “13 cities” (in Russia as well) which will be started in 2013.

Irina Popova
Was born in 1986 in Tver, Russia. Graduated from Journalism Faculty, Tver State University, Russia. Worked as a writer in a number of media. Graduated from the Rodchenko Moscow Photography and Multimeda School. Worked as a photographer in Ogoniok weekly magazine. Winned numerous prizes, including “The best Photographer of Russia 2009” and the “Youth Delpic Games”. Participant of the numerous photofestivals, including “The recontrais in Arles”, France, “Noorderlicht”, Groningen, Netherlands, and “Breda Photo”, Netherlands. Since 2010 lives in the Netherlands. Since 2011 – resident at international artist residence Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam. 2011 – participant of Photoquai Biennale, Paris. The works can be seen on www.irinapopova.net
