In a typical fashion magazine, you will see models that seem to fit a
standard that most people would deem unattainable, unless they were born to fit that standard. Typically the models in these magazines have the “perfect” measurements, the “perfect” body type, and the “perfect” facial structure. These models are also subject to direction by the photographer or the creative director for the magazine. Fashion magazine photos also follow certain “rules” of photography-usually the photos are taken generically, the photograph is taken while making sure that the clothing they are wearing is correctly advertised and not skewed by cutting off limbs or body parts. The primary focus of a fashion magazine isn’t so much on the model but rather the clothing.
This magazine is just the opposite. While you turn through the pages of this magazine, you will see the faces of a diverse group of people varying in age, race, gender, and body type. The only constant that remains in each photo is the white t-shirt and white backdrop per each person. This feeds into the direction that is relinquished on my part in this project, as opposed to the direction that takes place in fashion magazines/ads.
White is a sign of purity. When I put these people in front of my camera, I want to capture their initial reaction or their pure being, when put in this position. Each photo is taken in a non-conventional way (ie, overexposed, heads cut off, off center). As you go through this magazine, take notice of each person’s expression, the diversity, and the amount of personalities you see as you flip through the pages.
