First of all, you don't have to have known him previously to read the poems. He tells you what he believes in:
• His typewriter is his friend • His father is his judge • His work is his torment • Women are the secret of the universe
The poems are a tribute to creative persons, the ones who hang in, who don't desert, who stay, and transform “all the piddling little stuff” into something from which the rest of us can glean a measure of dignity.
The poems are frames--frames around the spaces between acts: between waking up and getting up, between getting up and going out, between “Sunday night / Monday morning.”
