This Field Guide is the product of a seven-week, graduate architecture seminar offered during the spring 2011 semester at the School of Architecture in the
College of Design, University of Minnesota. The course
commenced only days after the one-year anniversary of the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010, and was organized to support several emerging partnerships between the University of Minnesota’s College of Design (CDes), the Center for Sustainable Building Research (CSBR), the American Refugee Committee (ARC), and Architecture for Humanity (AFH). With these partnerships emerging in response to the disaster relief and recovery phases following the Haiti earthquake, there was a decision made to develop a research-based, working seminar with the explicit objective of building capacity among a group of students and faculty preparing to work directly with Architecture for Humanity and several local Haitian communities to rebuild and redesign schools in Haiti.
