Tokyo, la ville sans centre, peut s'enorgueillir d'avoir en son sein un ventre en la place du marché de Tsukiji, situé dans l'arrondissement de Chuuo, dont l'accès par la mer donne dans la baie de Tokyo.
Ce reportage, réalisé en 1996, a pour sujet l'effervescence du ventre de Tokyo. Plus de 500 espèces de poissons et produits de la mer s'y échangent, faisant de Tsukiji le premier marché de la mégalopole et du monde par sa diversité. Le marché ouvre très tôt le matin et, dès l'aube les ventes aux enchères de thon rouge débutent, certaines atteignant des sommes vertigineuses pour un seul thon gras. Dans les rues adjacentes, on peut déguster des poissons frais et découvrir des boutiques de cuisine et de coutellerie.
Après le grand tremblement de terre de 1923, la vingtaine de marchés aux poissons datant de la période Edo fut détruite et Tsukiji naquit des décombres pour centraliser la vente entre pécheurs et commerçants.
D'ici 2014, en dépit des nombreuses oppositions, le projet de délocaliser ce haut lieu à Toyasu a de fortes chances d'aboutir. Un pan de l'histoire de la ville pourrait ainsi être tourné.

Tokyo, the city without center, can proudly say to have a busy famous market place in Tsukiji, located in the Chuuo area which access to the sea lead to the bay of Tokyo.
This reportage, produced in 1996, shows the turmoil of the Belly of Tokyo. Everyday more than 500 species of fish and seafood are exchanged, this diversity making the Tsukiji market the first market of the megalopolis as well as in the world. The market opens early in the morning and at dawn auctions for bluefin tuna start, some reaching dizzying sums for a single fatty tuna. In the adjacent streets, you can enjoy fresh fish and discover kitchen and cutlery shops.
After the great earthquake of 1923, about twenty fish markets dating from the Edo period were destroyed and Tsukiji market was born to centralize the selling activity between fishermen and traders.
By 2014, despite numerous objections, the project to relocate this busy place to Toyasu is likely to succeed. A part of the history of the city could disappear.
