‘Since time immemorial our ancestors have left sacred images of the female form. From the caves of Lascaux in France to the Balkans in Eastern Europe the art and artifacts of the Paleolithic and Neolithic, which represent humans earliest myth-making impulses, indicate a deep reverence for life, and in particular for the Great Mother. She is honored as the giver and maintainer of life; out of her belly the great mystery issues forth, and to her all return. She was the single source of all life who took her energy from the springs and well, from sun and moon, and moist earth’.
Using the elements of earth, water, fire and air as keys I began to explore our connection to Nature. ‘The goddess is earth and sky, sun and moon. She is a spider, a bear, a whirl of snowflakes. She is the beauty of dawn, the innocence of a child, and the love that draws man to woman. Things are not what they seem, she assures us. Now as always, sacred power surrounds you on all sides. Her stories remind us, living in a mechanical, demystified world, of the mysterious and magical spirit that dwells in trees and rivers, mountains and animals.
As the concepts developed I transitioned into using the various ways humans have personified this energy. These themes are reflected throughout the work, and I used symbols from Latin America, Greece, Tibet, the Middle East, Native Americans, Japan and India
