Monsters at Recess
was a collaborative book-crafting process. The project was designed to reaffirm the importance and ability of art to function as an integral part of our children’s school day. Under the guidance of their teachers, the children wrote original sentences that pertained to a pre-discussed story. The children then worked with me in an editorial experience to better understand their places within the story, and better craft their thoughts. Once the children's sentences were written, I began illustrating them, using my pictures as a common thread to unify the children’s wonderfully creative ideas. This project also involved in-classroom brainstorming and art demonstrations, through which the children developed an understanding of my creative process as an artist. This book is the result of an interdisciplinary art initiative to regain some of the ground art has
lost in schools.
