“Hidden Places” primarily contains photographs taken during a year stay on Jeju Island, South Korea, where I was working as an English teacher and photojournalist for The Jeju Weekly. Jeju Island was recently voted as one of the New7Wonders of Nature. In addition, nine of its geological sites have received UNESCO recognition due to the diversity and rarity on the planet.
Besides traveling around Jeju Island, I visited Japan, where several of the images in the collection were captured. Finally, the 2009 Delphic Games, an international festival of visual art, poetry, music, and dance was held on Jeju. Some of the images of Japanese performers here, were photographed at that festival.
Some pieces in this collection are straight photos, which I consider visual haiku. Others are compositions arranged with the intention of documenting, within one frame, cultural aspects of my host country. Lastly, stories told through montage were created from various “treasures” encountered while adventuring with my camera.
