Acerca del libro
This art history book commemorates the work of the illustrious artist Walter H. Chapman and his contributions during WWII while serving with the 84th Division in Europe.
There is a neat story here: Unknown to Walter and Jean, and as a token of appreciation to them, I created this book so as to coincide with Walter's one hundred year old birthday! It was quite a welcome surprise for the Chapmans when it arrived. Jean even cried a bit!
I had many of Walter's fine, original work copies with my dad's inventory of WWII memorabilia he had saved ever since the end of WWII, some 63 years prior. It all worked wonderfully- a delightful surprise for them and a delight for me as well!
The well-liked Walter Chapman (1912-2015), a prolific watercolorist, is a renowned artist and for many decades was one of Toledo's best known artists and art teachers.
His work illustrated several comic magazines prior to WWII. During WWII, Chapman served with the 84th Infantry Division which engaged in three major offensive campaigns- the Rhineland, the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge) and Central Europe. Recognized for his artistic talent, the General of the 84th Division, Alexander R. Rolling, requested that Chapman become the principal artist to depict the Division's accomplishments. His illustrations which were widely published, served a distinctive morale and purpose while chronicling daily life.
This book is certainly one of a kind, a true collectible, and a tribute to Chapman's wonderful accomplishments.
