Preface by Gavin Simpson, June 2011
Welcome to the world of The Berliner.
Who is The Berliner? The title of this solid book in your hands comes from the name of a photographic blog by Alexander Huber, a resident of Berlin since he arrived there from Munich in 1992. Since then has exhibited in London, Berlin, Munich and Nuremberg. A successful photographer, he has also made several short films and documentaries.
Huber began The Berliner photographic blog in 2009 and it soon gained an underground following in Berlin. Why? Because this isn't the picture postcard Berlin of tourist shops. This is the Berlin locals know, love and live. We're talking the charm of its rough street corners, the political satire and wit on its walls, the very soul of a city beautifully captured in momentary reflections.
Technique? Huber walks the streets of Berlin a lot but you’ll find he sits and observes it for longer. Never leaving home without at least some kind of photographic equipment, he finds a spot and lies in wait for what he loves most - capturing the beauty in seemingly unimportant details as they unfold, people being themselves but isolated in the city scape, the singular person living out their life in the urban landscape.
Perhaps as much as his clear gift for photography is the fact that Huber knows Berlin. Since arriving he has lived on its many scenes and gotten to know its many faces. Ephemeral as these images and the medium they were presented through appear, this good old fashioned hard copy book is an important work, laying bare a city's soul for posterity. Immerse yourself in the real Berlin and open your heart to its soul.
Once you've seen the city through Huber's eyes, you might be forgiven for counting yourself as a Berliner too.
