Throughout my wanderings in Derby, I have happened upon many beautiful, but slowly
decaying, old buildings. So in this, my final year at Derby University, I have set out to explore these seemingly abandoned places and maybe find out why sites with so much character
The four buildings I have focused on were all once hugely important to a thriving industrial Derby, but they outlived their purpose and now, as the city argues about their future, some are starting to fall apart.
Although it was the exterior of each building that attracted me initially, I have focused my
attention on photographing their interiors; searching for traces of their past lives and
revealing the damage that time and, in some cases, trespassers have had on these wasted spaces.
Through repeated visits to each of the four sites and interviews with local people, I have
combined my own emotional reaction to these buildings with anecdotes to produce evocative interior imagery.
In times of industrial decline, it is so easy to get accustomed to derelict buildings, to walk past every day without wondering what they used to be, or what they could be again. With this
collection of images and anecdotes, I hope to open people’s eyes to the empty buildings around their cities, and the possibilities for new life and redevelopment hidden within their walls.
