There is something unsettling about this collection.
These photographs were taken over a twenty-year period, but there is the sense that they document a single, terrible event. There’s a feeling of movement, or rather of flight, as though the subjects are trying to escape something almost apocalyptic in scale, an atmosphere which is added to by religious warnings, and images of the lame and infirm.
Viewed as a whole, quite innocuous shots take on a different aspect; is that person just resting or are they pausing to catch their breath? And then there are the handful of tough guys – the youth outside Primark, the Columbian holding onto his girlfriend, swaggering travelers – who appear ready to turn the chaos around them to their advantage.
This is the world around us, a frightening and lonely place.
