Acerca del libro
In recent research, there have been growing interests in the phenomenal of gated communities in China, however what is more interesting is the fact that enclosed built-form have persisted and continue to exist in modern China for over
a millennia. Gated communities have been at the heart of Chinese traditional built-form for centuries, houses were designed to be experienced inwardly where it faces onto the central courtyard,
leaving entrance and walls on the street. Another point of interest is noted in the book of Remaking Chinese Urban Form: modernity, scarcity and space 1949-2005 by Duanfang Lu (2006), Lu observed that ‘the wall-building tradition (persisted) during successive political changes; (in the) socialist control in 1949 … 1960s work units, and the importance of walls have not decreased in the reform era; instead, the need for walls have been strengthened through private development’. The persistence during successive political regime indicates a deep cultural embedment in enclosed living lifestyle in China, something that is beyond the infl uence of the political ideology on the perceived ideal life.
Therefore this research will encompass the discovery of the influence that helped shaped enclosed living in China through
time. Providing a deeper understanding in the eff ects of culture and the perceived ideal life, which shapes the forms of
dwellings.
