Sakura, meaning cherry blossom, is a magical time in Japan declaring the arrival of spring. For a precious few weeks, the landscape in any one place is transformed into an enchanted wonderland, as the cherry blossom front sweeps north across the country.
This annual event holds an important cultural significance. The sudden appearance then swift disappearance echoes life; bringing a positive but reflective power.
The real beauty is not visual, but in the way the viewer is made to feel. This is described by the Japanese concept ‘mono no aware’.
In the same way, the individual images in this book attempt to conjure an emotion about each location. They use this period of time and miniature flower as a guide around central Japan, observing a deeply traditional but integrally progressive country.
