Acerca del libro
SlowExposures 2010 presents the work of forty-seven photographers chosen by our distinguished jurors Brett Levine and Jack Spencer. They have presented us with a diverse, rich picture of what the rural South means for natives, immigrants and visitors to this region. For both the creators of the images and viewers, the photographs conjure up a potent alchemy of perception, memory, myth, serenity, regret, and reflection.
For the natives, the complexities and challenges of growing up in the twentieth century rural South have seasoned their lives forever. Some immigrants to this place arrive with skewed, one-dimensional perceptions based on the photographs of Eudora Welty and Walker Evans and the televised struggles of the civil rights era. The reality of the place intrudes immediately and they are never the same again. We invite you to enjoy the images--and then, to look at them again. Like so much of this magical and confounding place, they have much more to impart than at first glance. To our photographers who have shared these images with all of us, our thanks and appreciation.
